With three friends I visited St. John’s Church at the far end of Valle Crucis, near Boone, NC. The church was locked so we peered in and I took a photo through one of the side windows. When I opened the photo I was astounded to see the woods behind me standing inside the church!

This lovely old coastal city in Croatia is circled by a 16th-century wall. We visited there not long after one of the terrible ethnic/religious Balkan wars. Through this portal the view of the Adriatic is stunning. Yet the portal bears shrapnel marks of recent conflict. God’s beauty, marred by human ferocity, is sobering. Watercolor •
